While most people use the final days of the year to recover from the holidays and look ahead, the world of Formula 1 pauses to remember a poignant date: December 29, 2013. On that day, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher suffered a severe skiing accident in Méribel, France.
The German legend underwent multiple surgeries and was placed in an induced coma, from which he awoke in the summer of 2014. Since then, he has required continuous care, though his condition remains intensely private. “It is very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible,” his wife, Corinna Schumacher, said in a recent Netflix documentary.
Schumacher’s influence extends to his son, Mick, who has frequently spoken about his father’s impact on his own racing career. Mick has stated that he would give up everything just for a chance to share a few words with Michael.
The Schumacher family made headlines again in 2025 due to a legal case: three men were convicted for attempting to blackmail the family, threatening to release hundreds of private medical documents and images in exchange for €15 million. One of the perpetrators received a three-year prison sentence, while his son was given a six-month suspended sentence. A former security employee of the Schumacher household received a two-year suspended sentence, a decision the family has appealed.
“We have appealed what we consider a sentence far too lenient for Mr. F.,” Corinna Schumacher said. “In my view, he was the mastermind. What shocked me most was the enormous betrayal of trust. He should receive a punishment that discourages potential copycats.”
Despite these challenges and the family’s strong desire for privacy, Michael Schumacher remains an enduring icon in Formula 1 and in the hearts of fans worldwide. His legacy also lives on through the Keep Fighting Foundation, established in his name to continue the charitable work he championed throughout his career.
