Ducati has confirmed that Marc Márquez will miss the upcoming Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix due to a right shoulder injury sustained during the Indonesian Grand Prix. The reigning world champion, 32, was involved in a first-lap collision with Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia), which left him with a fractured right collarbone and ligament damage to his shoulder.
After returning to Spain on Sunday evening, Márquez underwent medical checks at Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, where specialists Dr. Samuel Antuña and Dr. Ignacio Roger de Oña diagnosed a fracture at the base of the coracoid process. Fortunately, no previous injuries were aggravated and no significant bone displacement was found.
Doctors have therefore ruled out surgery, recommending instead rest and immobilisation to allow for natural healing. Ducati has confirmed that the seven-time world champion is not expected to return before the Portuguese Grand Prix in November.
“Fortunately, the injury isn’t serious, but it’s important to respect the recovery timeline,” Márquez said.
“My goal is to come back before the end of the season, but without pushing beyond the doctors’ advice. The main goals for both myself and the team have already been achieved, so now the priority is to recover fully.”
The injury comes just one week after Márquez secured his seventh MotoGP world title, his first since 2019, at Motegi — five years after the serious right arm fracture that had derailed his career.
The collision with Bezzecchi, which occurred at Turn 7 of the Mandalika circuit, was described by Márquez as a “racing incident.” The Ducati rider urged his fans to remain calm following social media backlash directed at the Italian.
Bezzecchi escaped without injury but will be summoned by the stewards for further review during next weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.
Ducati has yet to announce Márquez’s replacement for the upcoming rounds, though it is likely to call up test rider Michele Pirro, who has been unable to make any wildcard appearances this season under the current concession regulations.
