Auer Wins Wild Hockenheim Thriller as Preining Limit-Ditches to Fifth

HOCKENHEIM, GERMANY — Saturday afternoon’s opening DTM encounter at the Hockenheimring delivered one of the most chaotic, unpredictable, and championship-altering races of the 2026 season. When the dust settled on a red-flagged, error-strewn battle, Landgraf Mercedes driver Lucas Auer emerged victorious. However, the real story of the afternoon was the relentless ebb and flow of championship drama, featuring high-speed crashes, pit-lane heartbreak, and a remarkable recovery drive from the points leader.

Early Drama and Red Flag Chaos

As the lights went out to kick off Race 1, the tension among the title contenders was palpable. Fighting for position through the opening tour, pole-sitter Luca Engstler and Lucas Auer engaged in a fierce wheel-to-wheel scrap that culminated in a heavy collision at Turn 7. Engstler’s Lamborghini Temerario was pitched into the concrete barriers, bringing out an immediate red flag on lap two. Thankfully, the young German emerged uninjured, but the incident reshuffled the early running order and set a frantic tone for the afternoon.

Preining’s Mistake and Engel’s Charge

When racing resumed, championship leader Thomas Preining found himself on the back foot. Running near the sharp end of the field, the Manthey-Porsche driver misjudged his braking zone into Turn 3, sliding deep into the gravel trap. The excursion cost the Austrian a hefty chunk of positions and threatened to blow the championship wide open.

With Preining fighting his way out of the gravel, his primary title rivals sensed blood. Maro Engel seized control of the race, putting his WINWARD Mercedes-AMG into the lead as he looked to slash Preining’s cushion in the standings.

Pit Lane Heartbreak and The Recovery Drive

The race turned on its head once again during the mandatory pit stop window. While Engel had controlled the action from the front, a disastrous mechanical malfunction with a wheel gun during his service left his Mercedes stranded in the box for an extended duration. The costly delay dropped Engel tumbling down the order to fifth.

As the race entered its frantic final phase, the championship contenders were forced into damage control. Marco Wittmann carved a steady path through the chaos, driving his Schubert BMW to a brilliant third-place finish. Maro Engel salvaged fourth after being closely managed in the closing laps, while Thomas Preining staged a stellar recovery drive, dragging his “Grello” Porsche back up through the midfield to cross the line in fifth.

Up front, Lucas Auer managed the chaos expertly to take a popular victory ahead of Grasser Racing’s Mirko Bortolotti.

Championship Picture Heading to Sunday

With the chaos finalized, Preining’s damage limitation act successfully extended his championship advantage to 20 points over Wittmann heading into Sunday’s season-ending finale. Saturday’s race proved that at Hockenheim, no lead is safe until the checkered flag falls.
