Liam Lawson’s Mexican Grand Prix weekend has taken another dramatic turn after the Racing Bulls driver was disqualified from qualifying following a technical infringement involving his car’s MGU-K system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The New Zealander had secured eighth place in Saturday’s qualifying session, finishing ahead of teammate Arvid Lindblad. However, his result was subsequently deleted after FIA officials identified a breach of the Formula 1 technical regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The infringement occurred during Lawson’s in-lap in Q2, immediately after completing his fastest qualifying lap. According to the stewards’ official report, the Racing Bulls driver failed to lift off the throttle immediately after crossing the finish line, causing the MGU-K’s electrical power output to decrease at a rate exceeding the permitted limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The breach concerned Articles C5.12.6 and C5.12.7 of the Formula 1 Technical Regulations, which govern the permitted reduction of electrical power delivered by the Energy Recovery System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the stewards’ hearing, Racing Bulls argued that the infringement had provided no competitive advantage. The team also pointed out that it had voluntarily reported the irregularity to the FIA and fully cooperated with the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, those arguments were insufficient to avoid a penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The stewards stressed that compliance with the technical regulations is mandatory throughout the event, regardless of whether a driver or team gains a performance advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking into account previous decisions involving similar technical infringements, the FIA ruled that Lawson should be disqualified from the qualifying classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision compounds an already difficult weekend for Lawson, who had been involved in an incident with Max Verstappen during Friday’s second free practice session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The collision resulted in a one-place grid penalty for the Racing Bulls driver, initially dropping him from eighth to ninth on the starting grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the subsequent qualifying disqualification has significantly worsened his situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Importantly, Lawson has been disqualified from qualifying results, not from the Mexican Grand Prix itself<\/strong>.
