George Russell could be set for a difficult start to the Singapore Grand Prix weekend. The Mercedes driver is expected to receive a grid penalty after the power unit problem that forced him to retire from the most recent race at Sepang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russell was running in third place when, on lap 50 and under Safety Car conditions, he was forced to stop his Mercedes at the side of the track before Turn 1. The retirement proved particularly costly, not only in terms of the race result, but also because of the consequences the failure could have for the next round of the Formula 1 World Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mercedes is believed to have exhausted much of the available mileage on Russell\u2019s current pool of power unit components. As a result, the Brackley-based team is expected to introduce new elements on the Briton\u2019s car in Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Such a change would almost certainly result in a grid penalty. Depending on the number of components replaced, Russell could be forced to start from the back of the grid or close to the final rows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mercedes had originally planned to manage Russell\u2019s engine allocation through the next rounds of the season, potentially introducing fresh components at a more favourable point in the calendar. However, the failure suffered at Sepang appears to have changed those plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starting from the rear of the field would be particularly problematic at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Singapore is traditionally one of the most difficult tracks for overtaking. Its slow corners, narrow layout, close barriers and high-downforce configuration can make recovering positions extremely challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russell could therefore face one of the most demanding races of his season at a crucial point in the championship battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The technical failure from the previous race has already had a significant impact on the standings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russell appeared to be on course for a podium finish and looked capable of limiting the damage to Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who eventually finished second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, the retirement turned what could have been a manageable points loss into a much heavier blow to Russell\u2019s championship ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The British driver is now 84 points behind Antonelli and has already admitted that his chances of winning the title have become extremely limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A possible grid penalty in Singapore could therefore make an already difficult situation even more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mercedes is expected to confirm exactly which power unit components will be replaced before the start of Friday practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
