Aprilia and Ducati reportedly backed the idea, while KTM, Honda and Yamaha were initially considered open to supporting the measure.

However, the proposal quickly came under scrutiny because of its potential impact on the racing spectacle.

If a rider crashed or suffered a technical failure, they would have to wait for their only motorcycle to be repaired before returning to the track. In some circumstances, that could mean missing an entire practice session, qualifying session or even a race.

The situation would become even more complicated during flag-to-flag races, when riders switch motorcycles because of changing weather conditions.

There were also doubts over the actual financial benefits. Even with only one complete motorcycle available, teams would still need a large supply of spare components to repair damaged machines. That raised questions over how much money the proposal would genuinely save.

A possible compromise involving the introduction of a spare bike from qualifying onwards was also reportedly discussed, but it was viewed as an unnecessarily complicated solution.

Ducati and Aprilia could have had another advantage

Behind the cost-cutting argument, however, another potential motivation began to emerge.

Although no official lap times have been released, private tests involving the new 850cc MotoGP bikes and Pirelli tyres reportedly suggest that Ducati and Aprilia remain highly competitive ahead of the 2027 season.

All manufacturers will begin the new era on the same concession rank. A single-bike rule could therefore make it more difficult for rivals to close any performance gap.

With two motorcycles available, riders can quickly compare new components, aerodynamic packages and different set-ups during practice. Removing that second bike would reduce the opportunity to make direct back-to-back comparisons and potentially slow the development process.

According to El Periódico, Aprilia and Ducati remained in favour of the proposal, while KTM initially appeared ready to support it before ultimately changing its position. Honda and Yamaha were reportedly less committed.

Ezpeleta rejects the 4-1 argument

Perhaps the most surprising element of the dispute was an alleged attempt by some MSMA executives to argue that a 4-1 vote could still be considered sufficient to establish unanimity.

MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, who was reportedly opposed to the single-bike proposal, is said to have rejected that interpretation emphatically.

His response was clear:

“Unanimity means ‘without disagreement, unanimously’. Five out of five.”

KTM’s decision therefore appears to have ended the push for a single-bike rule, at least for now. Unless the manufacturers find another agreement, MotoGP riders will continue to have access to a second motorcycle when the championship enters its major new technical era in 2027.

Meta Description:
MotoGP’s 2027 single-bike proposal appears dead after KTM rejected the plan, preventing the MSMA from reaching the unanimity required for the rule.

Keywords:
MotoGP 2027, MotoGP single-bike rule, KTM MotoGP, MSMA, Carmelo Ezpeleta, Ducati MotoGP, Aprilia MotoGP, Honda MotoGP, Yamaha MotoGP, MotoGP regulations 2027, MotoGP 850cc, Pirelli MotoGP, MotoGP testing, MotoGP technical regulations

The controversial proposal to introduce a single-bike rule for MotoGP riders in 2027 appears to have been rejected after KTM refused to support the measure, preventing the MSMA manufacturers’ association from reaching the unanimity required for such a major regulatory change.
