The Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix will remain on the MotoGP calendar at least until 2031, following the signing of a new five-year extension that reinforces the country\u2019s long-term commitment to the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Malaysia first hosted a Grand Prix in 1991 at the Shah Alam circuit, where it remained until 1997. In 1998, the event was held for a single season in Johor before moving permanently to the Sepang International Circuit in 1999, which has hosted the race ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Minister of Youth and Sports Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, the renewal represents more than just an extension of a major international sporting event, describing it as a strategic government decision based on three key considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first is the role of MotoGP as a strategic national asset, generating significant benefits for tourism, hospitality, transport, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The second highlights the event\u2019s contribution to the development of Malaysia\u2019s motorsport ecosystem, supporting riders, technical staff, sports management, and technology development, with rising talents such as Moto3 race winner Hakim Danish and prospect Qabil Irfan being cited as examples. The third focuses on the wider economic impact, including job creation, growth of supporting industries, and year-round participation from local companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sepang International Circuit also hosts MotoGP pre-season testing, including the Shakedown and official tests, and remains a popular venue for private testing, underlining its importance as a global hub for motorcycle racing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
