MotoGP, Jorge Martin Targets Sepang Comeback Despite Wrist Fracture as Title Battle Intensifies

Jorge Martin is refusing to give up on his MotoGP world championship ambitions. The Aprilia rider is preparing to attempt a comeback at this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix, just days after fracturing his right wrist during the Australian Grand Prix Sprint at Phillip Island.

Aprilia Racing has confirmed that the Spaniard has travelled to Malaysia, where he is continuing his recovery ahead of the next round of the championship. His participation, however, remains subject to medical clearance, with doctors set to assess his condition before track action begins.

The decision highlights the importance of the Sepang weekend for Martin, who trails championship leader Marc Marquez by just ten points. Missing another race could significantly damage his hopes of securing a second premier-class world title.

Phillip Island Crash Leaves Martin Facing a Race Against Time

Martin’s latest injury occurred during the Australian Grand Prix Sprint, when he crashed on lap eight while battling Marquez.

Medical examinations revealed a non-displaced fracture of the distal radius in his right wrist, immediately casting doubt over his participation in Malaysia.

Further assessments carried out in Australia ruled out additional fractures, while the nature of the injury meant surgery was not required.

That allowed Martin to begin an intensive recovery programme, keeping alive the possibility of returning to the motorcycle within days.

Rather than travelling back to Spain, the Aprilia rider headed directly to Malaysia to continue treatment aimed at reducing inflammation, restoring mobility and managing pain.

Nevertheless, the challenge remains considerable. The right wrist is subjected to significant stress when riding a MotoGP machine, particularly under heavy braking and during rapid changes of direction.

Martin: “It’s Impossible to Make Predictions”

Despite his determination to race, Martin remains cautious about his chances of competing at Sepang.

“I’m receiving the necessary treatment to recover from the injury and arrive at Sepang in the best possible condition,” the Spaniard explained.

“It’s impossible to make predictions. We have to assess the situation day by day.”

The first decisive assessment is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, when Martin will undergo a medical examination to determine whether he is fit to participate in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Even if he receives clearance, his ability to complete the weekend will depend on how his injured wrist responds to the physical demands of riding the Aprilia RS-GP.

The Malaysian circuit presents an additional challenge, with its demanding braking zones, high temperatures and humidity making it one of the most physically exhausting venues on the MotoGP calendar.

Championship Battle Remains Open After Australian GP Cancellation

Martin’s determination to return is closely linked to the increasingly tense championship battle.

His crash in the Phillip Island Sprint allowed Marc Marquez to take the lead in the standings, moving ten points ahead of the Aprilia rider.

However, Martin avoided an even greater setback when Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix was cancelled because of adverse weather conditions.

The conditions prevented the safe operation of the medical helicopter, forcing organisers to abandon the race and leaving the championship gap unchanged.

With four rounds remaining, the title fight remains wide open, although another missed Grand Prix could give Marquez a significant opportunity to extend his advantage.

For Martin, every remaining point could prove decisive.

Sepang Brings Back Difficult Memories from 2025

A return to Malaysia would also carry particular significance for Martin, who endured one of the most difficult moments of his Aprilia career at Sepang.

During the 2025 pre-season test, the Spaniard suffered a heavy crash that marked the beginning of a series of injuries and setbacks throughout his first campaign with the Italian manufacturer.

Those physical problems restricted him to just seven Grand Prix appearances during the season and continued to affect his preparations for 2026.

Sepang has also traditionally proved challenging for Aprilia. At the 2025 Malaysian Grand Prix, Ai Ogura was the manufacturer’s highest finisher in tenth place, with Marco Bezzecchi following in eleventh.

This time, however, Martin’s immediate priority will not be outright performance but determining whether he can physically withstand the demands of the weekend.

Aprilia Awaits Medical Clearance Ahead of Malaysian Grand Prix

Aprilia Racing will continue monitoring Martin’s recovery before making any final decision about his participation.

The Italian manufacturer is keen to have its rider back on track as soon as possible, but avoiding further complications from a recent fracture remains an important consideration.

The Malaysian Grand Prix, scheduled for October 30 to November 1, represents a crucial stage of the championship.

Martin is determined to compete and keep the pressure on Marquez, although his return will depend entirely on the medical assessment and his physical condition.

For now, the Spaniard’s determination is unquestionable, but the final decision rests with the medical team. Thursday’s examination will establish whether Jorge Martin can return to his Aprilia at Sepang and continue his pursuit of the 2026 MotoGP world championship.
