Bezzecchi Triumphs at Mugello: Historic Home Victory as Aprilia Ends Ducati’s Dominance

Marco Bezzecchi secured a victory destined to go down in Italian motorcycle racing history. At Mugello, in front of his home crowd and under extreme weather conditions, the Italian rider claimed his first-ever win at the Tuscan circuit and delivered Aprilia’s maiden triumph in the Italian MotoGP Grand Prix.

The result carries even greater significance as it brings an end to Ducati’s winning streak at Mugello, which had stretched to four consecutive victories and included three straight podium sweeps since 2023. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere was Formula 1’s rising star Kimi Antonelli, who had the honor of waving the chequered flag before a delighted Italian crowd.

With track temperatures approaching 49°C at the start, tyre management proved crucial. Every rider opted for the medium front and medium rear tyre combination, turning the race into a demanding test of endurance, strategy, and consistency.

Starting from pole position, Bezzecchi initially lost the lead to teammate Jorge Martín but quickly regained control. Francesco Bagnaia also enjoyed an excellent start, climbing from sixth on the grid into the leading group as he looked to continue his remarkable record at Mugello.

The Ducati rider took the lead in the early stages and set a strong pace, but he was unable to shake off Bezzecchi. Behind them, an intense battle unfolded between Marc Márquez, Pedro Acosta, Fermín Aldeguer, and Ai Ogura, with the quartet exchanging positions in a thrilling contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

The decisive moment came with ten laps remaining. Taking advantage of a slight drop in Bagnaia’s pace, Bezzecchi launched a decisive move under braking into San Donato, reclaiming the lead and beginning to build the gap that would ultimately secure victory.

Shortly afterward, Martín also found a way past the Ducati star to move into second place. From that point on, the Aprilia rider expertly controlled the race, once again demonstrating his remarkable ability to deliver on Sundays.

In the closing stages, attention shifted to the battle for the final podium position. Ai Ogura, after a stunning charge through the field, caught Bagnaia on the final lap and even managed to pass him. The Italian, however, responded immediately in the final corner, defending third place with determination and securing a hard-earned podium finish.

Marc Márquez endured a more difficult ending. The Spaniard paid the price for the physical demands of one of the toughest circuits on the calendar and slipped to seventh place after spending much of the race fighting near the podium positions.

For Bezzecchi, the victory carries special meaning. He had never previously won at either Mugello or Misano, Italy’s two premier motorcycle racing venues. The result also strengthens his position at the top of the championship standings, extending his advantage over Jorge Martín to 17 points.

It was a perfect Sunday for Bezzecchi, Aprilia, and Italian motorcycle racing. At Mugello, a new king emerged, celebrated by thousands of fans who witnessed one of the defining performances of the season.
