Haas has announced a major change to its driver line-up ahead of the São Paulo Grand Prix, confirming that Rafael Câmara will make his Formula 1 debut at Interlagos from November 6–8.
The 21-year-old Brazilian, who currently leads the Formula 2 championship, will replace Esteban Ocon, whose time behind the wheel for the American outfit has come to an early end.
The announcement follows a turbulent Mexican Grand Prix weekend, during which Ocon was replaced by reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa. The Japanese driver went on to finish tenth, securing a valuable championship point for Haas.
Ocon’s Haas Career Ends Early as Komatsu Keeps Reasons Private
Ocon’s departure marks an unexpected conclusion to his time with Haas. The Frenchman had already been due to leave the team at the end of the 2026 season, but the latest decision means he will not compete in any of the remaining races.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu confirmed the move but declined to explain the circumstances behind Ocon’s removal.
According to Komatsu, the decision was communicated to the driver, with Haas believing that the change represents the best course of action for the team’s future.
The Japanese team boss also made it clear that discussions between Ocon and the team would remain private.
Reports emerging during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend suggested possible disagreements between Ocon and members of the Haas organisation. However, the team has not confirmed whether those alleged tensions played any role in its decision.
Rafael Câmara Set for Dream Formula 1 Debut at Interlagos
Ocon’s early exit creates an unexpected opportunity for Rafael Câmara, one of the most promising young drivers to emerge from the Ferrari Driver Academy.
The Brazilian had already secured a multi-year agreement with Haas, announced on October 15, which was set to see him join the team’s Formula 1 line-up in 2027.
Instead, his debut will come several months earlier than originally planned, and on one of the most significant stages of his career: his home Grand Prix at Interlagos.
Câmara has enjoyed an impressive rise through the junior categories, winning the Formula Regional European Championship in 2024 before claiming the FIA Formula 3 title in 2025.
He has continued that momentum in Formula 2, establishing himself as a championship contender with Invicta Racing.
By the time Haas announced his signing, Câmara had already secured three Feature Race victories and five pole positions during the 2026 F2 campaign.
His promotion offers him an early opportunity to gain valuable Formula 1 experience before his first full season in 2027.
Portimão Test Helped Convince Haas
Câmara is not entirely unfamiliar with the American team.
In August, the Brazilian completed a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) session at Portugal’s Portimão circuit, driving the Haas VF-25.
His performance reportedly made a positive impression on the team’s management and engineering staff.
Komatsu pointed to that test when discussing the decision to give Câmara his first Grand Prix opportunity, expressing confidence in the young driver’s ability to handle the challenge.
Nevertheless, the São Paulo Grand Prix will represent a significant step forward.
Câmara will need to adapt quickly to the VF-26 while dealing with the demands of a full Formula 1 race weekend, including competitive qualifying sessions and his first Grand Prix start.
Making his debut in front of a passionate Brazilian crowd will add another dimension to an already demanding occasion.
Hirakawa Unavailable as Haas Looks Towards 2027
The decision to promote Câmara has also been influenced by Ryo Hirakawa’s unavailability for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The Japanese driver, who replaced Ocon in Mexico and finished tenth, has commitments with Toyota in the FIA World Endurance Championship on the same weekend.
With Hirakawa unavailable, Haas has opted to give its incoming 2027 driver an early opportunity rather than turn to another temporary replacement.
For now, however, Câmara has only been confirmed for the São Paulo Grand Prix. Haas has yet to announce who will partner Bearman in the remaining rounds of the 2026 championship.
The Brazilian weekend will therefore mark an important moment for the American outfit as it begins preparing for its future.
While Ocon’s 2026 campaign with Haas has come to an abrupt end, Câmara now has the chance to demonstrate his potential on Formula 1’s biggest stage, beginning with a highly anticipated debut in front of his home fans.
