MotoGP Malaysia: Pedro Acosta wins Sepang Sprint as Marc Marquez keeps championship under control

Pedro Acosta emerged as the star of Saturday’s MotoGP Sprint at Sepang, taking victory aboard his KTM after showing strong pace throughout the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend.

The Spaniard had already demonstrated his competitiveness during qualifying, securing third place on the grid, just 0.084 seconds behind pole-sitter Alex Marquez.

His Sprint victory represented a significant achievement for KTM at one of the championship’s most demanding circuits, where high temperatures, tyre management and physical endurance play a crucial role.

Marc Marquez focuses on the championship

While Acosta celebrated his Sprint triumph, Marc Marquez remained firmly focused on the bigger picture.

The factory Ducati rider arrived in Malaysia holding a ten-point advantage over Jorge Martin in the championship standings, with the title fight approaching a critical stage.

Martin’s withdrawal from the Sepang weekend further complicated the situation for Aprilia. The Spaniard had attempted to return to action after suffering a right wrist injury in Australia, but persistent pain and difficulties under braking forced him to abandon his comeback.

With his closest rival sidelined, Marquez has an opportunity to strengthen his position in the standings and move closer to a tenth world championship title.

Ducati and Aprilia remain competitive

The Malaysian Grand Prix weekend began with an impressive qualifying performance from Alex Marquez, who secured pole position with a lap of 1:56.493.

The Gresini Ducati rider edged out his brother Marc by just 0.070 seconds, while Acosta completed the front row, only 0.084 seconds off the fastest time.

Aprilia also showed encouraging pace, with Ai Ogura and Marco Bezzecchi securing fourth and fifth positions respectively.

However, Martin’s withdrawal dealt a significant blow to the Italian manufacturer’s championship ambitions.

Acosta’s Sprint victory added another contender to the battle at the front, highlighting KTM’s ability to challenge Ducati and Aprilia on one of the calendar’s most technically demanding circuits.

Attention turns to Sunday’s Grand Prix

The Malaysian Grand Prix weekend continues on Sunday with the 20-lap main race at Sepang.

Acosta will aim to build on his Sprint success and fight for another victory, while Marc Marquez will look to maximise his championship advantage.

With the 2026 MotoGP season approaching its conclusion, every point could prove decisive in determining the destination of the world title.
