Andrea Kimi Antonelli emerged as the undisputed star of the 2026 United States Grand Prix. At the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver delivered another crucial victory in his pursuit of the Formula 1 World Championship, finishing ahead of Charles Leclerc‘s Ferrari and Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.
It was a triumph built on a flawless start, outstanding race pace and a perfectly executed strategy that allowed the championship leader to remain in control even during the most demanding phases of the race.
After securing pole position on Saturday, Antonelli converted his front-row advantage into another significant victory, further strengthening his position at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.
Antonelli Makes the Perfect Start as Leclerc Challenges Verstappen
When the lights went out, Antonelli made no mistakes. The Mercedes driver retained the lead into Turn 1, while Charles Leclerc produced an excellent getaway to move ahead of Max Verstappen and briefly take second place.
The Red Bull driver responded almost immediately, reclaiming the position during the opening lap. However, the battle between his closest rivals gave Antonelli the opportunity to establish an early advantage.
The opening stages also featured drama further down the field. Contact involving Fernando Alonso, Alexander Albon and Esteban Ocon scattered debris across the circuit, prompting an early Virtual Safety Car intervention.
When racing resumed, Antonelli maintained his lead and quickly demonstrated that he had the pace to keep his rivals at a comfortable distance.
Mercedes Gets the Strategy Right as Verstappen Attempts to Fight Back
The battle for victory soon developed into a strategic contest.
Antonelli started on medium tyres, while Verstappen opted for soft compounds in an attempt to gain an early advantage through a more aggressive approach.
Red Bull brought the Dutchman into the pits on lap 14, fitting another set of soft tyres. The decision allowed Verstappen to push harder during the middle phase of the race but also committed him to an additional pit stop.
Mercedes adopted a different approach.
Antonelli extended his opening stint until lap 25, when he finally came into the pits after building a substantial advantage. The Italian rejoined in fourth place before quickly recovering ground as his rivals completed their respective stops.
The Mercedes pit wall’s strategy proved decisive. Combining consistent lap times with effective tyre management, Antonelli regained the lead while Verstappen struggled with the demands of his alternative strategy.
As the race progressed, the Italian steadily increased his advantage, eventually stretching his lead to more than 16 seconds.
Leclerc Delivers a Decisive Overtake on Verstappen
While Antonelli appeared untouchable at the front, the fight for the remaining podium positions provided some of the most exciting moments of the afternoon.
After losing second place during the opening stages, Charles Leclerc gradually closed the gap to Verstappen’s Red Bull.
The Ferrari driver increased the pressure on the four-time World Champion before finally making his move on lap 49, completing the overtake that secured second position.
It was a crucial manoeuvre for the Monegasque, allowing Ferrari to claim an important result at a circuit where Mercedes had demonstrated particularly strong performance.
Verstappen was forced to settle for third place, while Leclerc completed an impressive recovery to underline the competitiveness of the Maranello-based team’s car.
Hamilton Finishes Fourth as Russell Receives a Penalty
Behind the leading trio, Lewis Hamilton secured fourth place in the second Ferrari after getting the better of Lando Norris’s McLaren.
The result allowed Ferrari to place both cars inside the top four, collecting valuable points in the Constructors’ Championship.
It was a more difficult afternoon for George Russell.
The Mercedes driver received a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage by leaving the track, further compromising an already challenging race.
There was also drama further down the order, with Oliver Bearman involved in an incident that resulted in a penalty before his eventual retirement. Franco Colapinto also failed to reach the chequered flag.
During the closing stages, on lap 53, Valtteri Bottas’s Cadillac stopped on the circuit, triggering another Virtual Safety Car period.
However, the interruption had little impact on the leading positions, with Antonelli maintaining control until the finish.
Antonelli Moves Another Step Closer to the World Championship
Victory in Austin represents another major milestone in Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable 2026 Formula 1 campaign.
The Italian arrived in the United States holding a 102-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell, with a mathematical opportunity to secure his maiden World Championship.
However, victory alone would not have been enough to guarantee the title. Antonelli also needed favourable results from his closest challengers.
With Hamilton finishing fourth and the race unfolding as it did, the championship could not be mathematically settled in Texas.
The title celebrations must therefore wait, although the championship situation remains firmly in Antonelli’s favour.
Austin provided yet another demonstration of the young Mercedes driver’s growing maturity, combining outright speed, intelligent race management and strategic discipline.
The World Championship is not officially his just yet, but Antonelli has taken another enormous step towards achieving what would be a historic triumph for Italian motorsport.
With another commanding victory behind him, the message from Austin is unmistakable: Kimi Antonelli is closing in on the Formula 1 World Championship.
