GT World Challenge Europe: Boutsen VDS Claims Pole Position at Portimão as Porsche Leads Mercedes and Ferrari

Boutsen VDS secured pole position for the GT World Challenge Europe season finale at Portimão, putting Porsche at the front of the grid ahead of Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari in a fiercely contested qualifying session.

The GT World Challenge Europe 2026 season finale at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve promises an exciting battle after Boutsen VDS claimed pole position for the three-hour race at Portimão.

The Belgian squad delivered an outstanding performance with its Porsche 911 GT3 R, emerging on top in a qualifying session featuring some of the strongest GT3 teams and drivers in international motorsport.

With Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari also showing competitive pace, the final round of the Endurance Cup is set to provide a closely fought conclusion to the championship.

Boutsen VDS Delivers an Impressive Qualifying Performance

The Boutsen VDS crew made the most of the Porsche 911 GT3 R’s potential around the demanding Portuguese circuit, combining speed and consistency across the three qualifying segments.

Unlike Formula 1, qualifying in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup is determined by the average lap times recorded by the three drivers sharing each car.

This format rewards the overall performance of the crew rather than a single outstanding lap, making consistency particularly important.

Boutsen VDS proved strongest when it mattered, securing a valuable pole position ahead of Sunday’s three-hour race.

Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari Remain Strong Contenders

Although Porsche claimed the top spot, Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari demonstrated that they have the pace to challenge for victory.

The narrow margins separating the leading competitors highlight the competitiveness of the GT3 field, where different manufacturers can exploit their strengths across the Algarve circuit’s combination of fast corners, elevation changes and technical sections.

Mercedes-AMG will be looking to convert its qualifying performance into a strong race result, while Ferrari remains firmly in contention for the final victory of the season.

Race strategy, tyre management and driver changes are expected to play decisive roles over the three-hour distance.

Verstappen and Valentino Rossi Add Further Interest

The Portimão weekend has attracted particular attention thanks to the presence of Max Verstappen and Valentino Rossi, two of the most recognisable names in motorsport.

Verstappen is competing in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 entered by Verstappen Racing alongside Chris Lulham and Ben Barnicoat, taking advantage of a break in the Formula 1 calendar to continue his involvement in GT racing.

Meanwhile, nine-time motorcycle world champion Valentino Rossi is competing with Team WRT in a BMW M4 GT3 EVO.

Their participation adds another dimension to an already competitive event, bringing together established GT specialists and champions from other racing disciplines.

Portimão Set for an Exciting Season Finale

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is one of the most challenging circuits on the GT World Challenge Europe calendar.

Its undulating layout, blind corners and demanding braking zones place considerable pressure on drivers and machinery, while traffic management will be crucial with a large field of GT3 cars competing across several categories.

Although Boutsen VDS will start from the most advantageous position, pole position alone offers no guarantee of victory.

The three-hour race will test the teams’ ability to manage tyres, execute efficient pit stops and adapt their strategies as the contest develops.

With Porsche, Mercedes-AMG and Ferrari all capable of fighting at the front, the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe season finale at Portimão promises an intense battle until the chequered flag.
