MONZA, ITALY – George Russell put Mercedes at the top of the timesheets in second practice for the Italian Grand Prix, edging Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc in a closely fought session at Monza.
Russell produced the fastest lap during the qualifying simulation on soft tyres, finishing just 0.120 seconds ahead of Leclerc. The result provided an immediate response from Mercedes after Leclerc had topped the opening practice session earlier in the day.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the top three, giving Mercedes two cars inside the first three positions. However, the Italian faces a difficult Sunday after being handed a grid penalty linked to a power unit change, meaning he is expected to start the race from the back of the field.
For Russell, the strong FP2 performance could prove particularly important in the championship battle. With Antonelli facing a significant setback for Sunday’s race, the Mercedes driver has an opportunity to close the gap to his teammate in the standings.
Leclerc nevertheless continued to show strong pace in front of the Ferrari home crowd. After setting the benchmark in FP1, the Monegasque remained firmly in contention and finished only a fraction behind Russell, suggesting that Ferrari and Mercedes are currently closely matched over a single lap.
Lando Norris was fourth for McLaren, followed by Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari. Oscar Piastri completed the top six, while the remaining positions in the top ten were occupied by Arvid Lindblad, Ollie Bearman, Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda.
Verstappen endured a more difficult session than his main rivals. The Red Bull driver could manage only ninth place after reporting a lack of aerodynamic load from his car.
The FP2 results have therefore provided no clear indication of a dominant team heading into qualifying. Ferrari showed impressive speed in the opening session, while Mercedes responded strongly in the afternoon with Russell at the front.
With only a small margin separating Russell and Leclerc, Saturday’s qualifying session promises to be a major battle for pole position at the Temple of Speed.
The Ferrari fans will be hoping for a response from Leclerc, but for now it is Mercedes that holds the advantage heading into the final practice session and qualifying.
